Is it permissible to pray on a padded mat?
Scholars generally allow praying on a soft mat as long as your forehead and nose rest firmly and you feel the ground beneath them. If you are unsure about your own situation, ask your local imam.
Will the thickness really help my knees?
The thick, raised cushion spreads the pressure that a thin mat sends straight into your knees. Many people who used to stack two or three mats only need this one. If sitting back on your heels is the painful part, the Sujud Stool is made for that.
