3D Basketball

The Basketball 🏀

⚡ Medium 🕐 1 hour 🧒 Ages 7+ 🎹 Multi-colour

About this model

Create a fun 3D basketball by tracing simple shapes, attaching them together and adding the final ball details. This project is perfect for kids who want to learn how to build rounded 3D shapes step by step.

🛒 What you'll need

  • Orange filament (main ball colour)
  • A second filament colour for the final basketball lines
  • A stencil
  • A DoodlePad
  • Your Aereso 3D pen

Step by step 👇

1

Begin tracing

Step 1 basketball

Gather the stencil, a DoodlePad and your Create+ 3D Pen. Begin tracing each element on the stencil using a back-and-forth motion.

Try to keep your lines even so each shape holds together more easily.
2

Attach the shapes

Take the 3 half-circle shapes and attach them one by one to the full circle shape. Attach the first half circle to the middle of the full circle, then space the last two half circles evenly from the centre. Repeat this step with the second set of shapes.

Keep the spacing balanced so both halves match when you join them later.
3

Fill in the shape

Now use a criss-cross motion to draw the pen across the shape and fill in the open spaces. Continue this motion until the shape is fully filled in. Repeat this step with the second half.

Let each half cool slightly before picking it up.
4

Join the halves

Step 4 basketball

Take each half sphere and hold them together with one hand. With the other hand, doodle the pieces together. When finished, you should have a full ball.

Use small connecting lines first, then reinforce the seam if needed.
5

Add the basketball details

Using a different colour filament, add the final details to make it look like a basketball. Draw a single line around the diameter of the ball, then repeat this on the other side. You should end up with two circle outlines. Finally, add one curved circle shape to the left and one to the right of the diameter line. Your basketball is complete!

💡 Pro tip

Rounded projects look best when you let each section cool before the next step. That helps the ball keep a clean, even shape all the way through.
